Church Magazine: Christmas in Bethlehem

At Christmas many of us will receive cards depicting Bethlehem, a place where day-to-day living now is very difficult for many of its inhabitants. The Church of Scotland World Mission Council wants to encourage people in Scotland to send Christmas cards to our partners in Bethlehem to let them know we remember them at Christmas. Just follow these three simple steps:

1. Choose a person or a group from the list below to receive your card
2. Write a message to them in your card
3. Address your card to the person or group and send c/o

Our partners in Bethlehem are:

  • The Evangelical Lutheran Christmas Church in Bethlehem. Send greetings to the minister, Pastor Mitri Raheb & the whole congregation or to a family in the congregation. 

  • Faten Nastas, an artist and Chairperson of the Art and Design department at Dar al-Kalima College of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. Faten, a Faithshare Student in 2010-11 also exhibited in Edinburgh during the 2011 Festival.

  • Al Shurooq School for the Blind. Address greetings to Head Teacher, Helen Shehadeh and pupils. Some of the pupils may not be able to go home for the holiday.

  • Ma’an lil-Hayat, (a  L’Arche group) a wool-felting project for people who made the doves which were sold at the General Assembly in 2011. Send greetings to the manager, Mahera and members of the group.

  • Send a card to Daoud Nassar and his family at the Tent of Nations, family land which he has set up as a retreat and meeting centre to promote understanding, build bridges of reconciliation and understanding between people from different countries and cultures. Daoud was a delegate at the General Assembly in 2011.

  • Wi’am Palestinian Conflict Resolution Centre is a grassroots organisation working within the wider Palestinian community to promote peace by training people on both sides of the Palestine-Israel conflict in peaceful relationship-building, non-violent responses to injustice and conflict, and the promotion of human rights. Send greetings to Dr Zoughbi Zoughbi, Director, and staff.
